🇺🇸 U.S. National Chemistry Olympiad

Overview

Logo

The U.S. National Chemistry Olympiad (USNCO) is the premier high school chemistry competition in the United States, administered by the American Chemical Society (ACS) since 1984. The program operates under the ACS Division of Chemical Education (DivCHED), headquartered in Washington, D.C., and serves as the sole pathway for selecting the four-member Team USA for the International Chemistry Olympiad (IChO).

The USNCO is organized through a nationwide network of approximately 164 ACS Local Sections, each of which appoints a USNCO coordinator to administer the Local Section Exam in March. A National Committee of university chemistry professors, high school teachers, and ACS staff oversees the National Exam design, grading, Study Camp, and IChO team selection. Mentors are recruited on three-year terms to work with finalists and accompany the team to IChO.

With approximately 10,000 participants at the local level and roughly 1,000 at the national level annually, the USNCO is one of the largest chemistry olympiad programs in the world. The USA has been an IChO participant since 1984 and has hosted the IChO twice: the 24th IChO in 1992 (Pittsburgh and Washington, D.C.) and the 44th IChO in 2012 (Washington, D.C.).

🏆 Competition Pipeline

The USNCO follows a three-stage pipeline: Local Section Exam → National Exam → Study Camp.

1⃣ Local Section Exam (March)

  • Format: 60 multiple-choice questions
  • Duration: 110 minutes
  • Participants: ~10,000 students nationwide
  • Advancement: ~12 students per local section (~1,000 total)

Each ACS Local Section nominates approximately 12 top-scoring students (subject to a maximum of 2 per high school) to advance to the National Exam. Due to the per-school cap, strong STEM magnet schools may have internal cutoffs far exceeding the section cutoff.

2⃣ National Exam (April)

The National Exam is a rigorous three-part examination taken by approximately 1,000 students:

Part Format Duration Points
Part I 60 multiple-choice questions 90 minutes 60
Part II 8 free-response problems 105 minutes 100
Part III 2 lab practical problems 90 minutes 50
Total 4 hours 45 min 210

Approximately 50 students receive High Honors and ~190 receive Honors based on national exam scores. The top 20 scorers are invited to the Study Camp.

3⃣ Study Camp (June)

The top 20 national exam scorers attend an intensive two-week residential Study Camp, currently hosted at the University of Maryland, College Park (previously held at the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs through at least 2020). The camp features:

  • All-day lectures by university faculty covering junior-year college chemistry major-level material
  • Advanced laboratory training and hands-on experiments
  • Multiple rounds of theoretical and practical selection exams of extreme difficulty
  • The final 4-member IChO team is selected based on overall camp performance

Only U.S. citizens or permanent residents are eligible for the IChO team. The team announcement is traditionally made at a banquet near the end of camp.

Info

The Study Camp represents the pinnacle of USNCO training. Faculty from the host university's Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry serve as primary instructors, supplemented by recruited mentors on three-year terms who design assessments and accompany the team to IChO.

The daily schedule is intensive, with lectures, problem sessions, and laboratory work filling all daylight hours. The curriculum covers topics far beyond what most high school students encounter, including advanced organic synthesis, inorganic coordination chemistry, physical chemistry thermodynamics, and instrumental analysis. The camp is designed to bring students from national-level knowledge to IChO-ready proficiency in just two weeks.

Exam Topics and Difficulty

Knowledge Coverage

Slightly above AP Chemistry: stoichiometry, gas laws, thermodynamics, kinetics, equilibrium, acids and bases, electrochemistry, atomic structure, periodicity, bonding and molecular structure, descriptive chemistry, and basic organic nomenclature.

Tests the same breadth as the local exam but at introductory college general chemistry level, with additional organic and physical chemistry content.

Requires fully worked solutions to demanding multi-step problems involving complex equilibrium, enzyme kinetics, deep thermodynamics, non-standard electrochemistry, and introductory college-level organic chemistry (reaction mechanisms, stereochemistry, spectroscopy, multi-step synthesis).

A hands-on laboratory practical testing experimental design, laboratory technique, observation, data analysis, and interpretation.

Junior-year college chemistry major level. Preparation at this stage typically requires resources like Clayden's Organic Chemistry textbook and international (Russian, East Asian) preparatory problems.

🗺 Strong States

While no single source publishes comprehensive state-by-state USNCO statistics, several states and regions consistently produce top performers and IChO team members:

  • California

The dominant force, with multiple competitive ACS Local Sections (Southern California, Orange County, San Diego, San Francisco). The state's STEM magnet schools and strong tutoring culture create exceptionally high local section cutoffs.

  • Texas

(Dallas–Fort Worth, Houston, Austin sections) Another major contributor, with large participation numbers and frequent IChO team representation.

  • New York / New Jersey

(NY/NJ metro area) A strong STEM corridor with high participation density and competitive local cutoffs.

  • Massachusetts

(Boston area) Concentration of elite universities and STEM-focused high schools, also produces a disproportionate number of national top scorers.

Other notable contributors include Washington (Puget Sound section), Indiana, North Carolina, and Virginia. The competitive intensity varies enormously by local section — students in CA or TX may need scores in the high 50s (out of 60) to advance, while less competitive sections may accept scores in the 40s.

🎓 Student Outcomes

USNCO top performers, particularly IChO team members, typically gain admission to the most selective universities in the United States. MIT, Harvard, Stanford, Princeton, Caltech, and Yale are the most common destinations. IChO medals are widely regarded as among the strongest extracurricular achievements for college admissions.

A 2007 C&EN feature on chemistry olympians from 1987–2004 found that former team members pursued careers in chemistry, medicine, materials science, mathematics, and teaching. The program is described by alumni as a "valuable ambassadorial and formative experience" that shapes their scientific identity.

🕒 History

  • 1984: ACS-sponsored USNCO program begins; USA participates in IChO for the first time.
  • 1992: USA hosts the 24th IChO in Pittsburgh and Washington, D.C.
  • 2000: USA student ranks #1 overall at IChO.
  • 2012: USA hosts the 44th IChO in Washington, D.C.
  • 2020: Alec Zhu achieves #1 overall ranking at the 52nd IChO (virtual, hosted from Istanbul).
  • 2025: Team USA earns 4 Gold at IChO 57 in Dubai.

IChO Performance

The USA is one of the strongest IChO nations historically, with an all-time record of 62 Gold, 73 Silver, 33 Bronze, and 1 Honorable Mention (1984–2026).
